Coming and Going

I have a friend who is learning a certain software to help her write a book.  Today I asked her two questions:

How’s it coming with your study?

How’s it going with your book?

It opened my eyes to the similarity in these two questions and the possible difference. I think we tend to use these two expressions almost interchangeably, and yet I believe there is a subtle difference that became apparent to me in this situation.

My friend is studying the software.  She is taking that knowledge into her head.  How’s it coming, I asked, because the knowledge is coming to her.

She is giving knowledge in the case of writing her book. How is it going? I ask this because the information is going from her to the reader.

This is simply an observation. Do you have any thoughts about this?  Reply/comment below and give us your thoughts.
